Anacortes Terminal of the Anacortes – Guemes Island Ferry

After many years of service, the prestressed girders at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal showed severe signs of saltwater intrusion and corrosion. This BRAC funded project replaced the prestressed girder approaches for both sides of the Anacortes – Guemes Ferry. On the Anacortes side, the existing deck bulb tee girders were replaced with similar but improved deck bulb tee girders. To extend the service life of the terminal, the new girders have enhanced corrosion protection including a dense micro silica concrete mix, galvanized coated reinforcing and epoxy coated strand to improve the durability of the structure.

The whole project was designed and built as with “accelerated bridge construction” details to limit the impact to residents of Guemes Island and the terminal was closed for only eight weeks during construction.
