The 600 foot long Buckland River Bridge provides cross river access and transport of new water and sewer lines for a remote village in Northern Alaska. Shearer Design developed a Bridge Study Report, as well as, a Design Study Report to evaluate potential bridge types in this environmentally harsh environment. Four span arrangements and bridge types: cable stayed, plate girder, truss and rolled steel girders, were developed, analyzed and cost estimated.

Ice jam formation was a major concern for the project. A computer discrete element model was used to investigate several pier arrangements and sizes to determine the optimum arrangement for ice passage.
