Guemes Terminal of the Anacortes – Guemes Island Ferry

After many years of service in this marine climate, the prestressed girders showed severe signs of saltwater intrusion. This BRAC funded project replaced the prestressed girder approaches for both sides of the Anacortes – Guemes Ferry. At the Guemes Terminal, the existing deck bulb tee girders were replaced with galvanized steel girders and a concrete deck. The use of steel girders at this location was preferred to larger and heavier prestressed concrete girders to allow for easier and quicker superstructure assembly with smaller construction equipment.

The whole project was designed for a remote location with the only access by boat using “accelerated bridge construction” details incorporating the use of prefabricated and precast elements for quick on site erection. The terminal was out of service for only 8 weeks to limit the access impacts to the Guemes Island.
