Seward Merdian Undercrossing

Seward Meridian Undercrossing

Seward Highway, AK

The Seward Meridian Bridge is part of the Seward Highway; at this location, the highway was elevated to provide a grade separation. The bridge is 188 feet long and was constructed with a cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete box girder superstructure. Shearer Design provided falsework design as well as a removal sequence for this structure.

Shearer Design developed a horizontal launching concept to set the girders on this 418 foot long two-span bridge in S.E. Alaska. This scheme eliminated the need to build expensive access trestles or mobilize large cranes. Full plans and specifications were prepared including: jacking equipment, tracks, Hillman rollers and temporary splice bents for assembly of the steel box girder segments.

Shearer Design engineered a temporary concrete pier to support the horizontal launch of this 300 foot steel plate girder bridge. This bridge redesign C.R.I.P. (Cost Reduction Incentive Proposal) replaced a steel bolt up pier prepared under the original design contract. The new design saved one month of construction time and reduced cost for the Contractor.
